The night was very lonely as Desaray stared up at the ceiling of her makeshift fort. She made it in a concealed space, but she still felt too nervous to sleep. She did not dare start a fire at this time of night. She did not want to be seen by anyone. She was afraid of drawing the attention of some high-level monster and then needing to fight for her life.

Being torn from her father with no current way of getting to where he is was not easy for her. While now a dragon, she was still a fourteen-year-old girl. Not long ago, she was smiling and hanging out with her friends, doing the chores around the house while her father worked overtime. On weekends she would cook him a nice supper and maybe even go to the mall to do some window shopping. She was living what she considered at the time a normal everyday life for a girl her age.

But now she was fighting and killing monsters. She had to always be aware of her surroundings since she never knew when she would be attacked next. If she was not careful, she might end up being eaten alive by some monster while she slept.

That was why her mind was on trying to find ways to level up and evolve. If she could evolve, then she may be able to fly, and then she could fly up to the floating island and hopefully be reunited with her father and friends once more.

Desaray did not know when she fell asleep. She did not know if it was due to the stress of the day or what, but when she woke up, it was already light out. She had curled up into the far corner of her makeshift base and used her tail as a means of comforting herself. She rubbed her eyes and slowly made her way to the base’s exit, only to freeze when she saw the scene in front of her.

“Where did this forest come from!?” Desaray yelled out as she quickly went outside after recovering from her shock. She looked around and saw nothing but trees all around her.

While stunned at the sudden change in scenery, Desaray suddenly had a bad feeling. She ran full speed towards the huge hole that had formed yesterday after the floating island was formed. She could not see the sky all too well due to all the tree canopies blocking her view. But when she reached the edge of what should have been a massive hole and saw a huge lake there instead, she gasped in shock for a second before lifting her head skyward.

“It’s gone. It’s gone!” Desaray’s eyes began to water up. The floating island that her father and friends were on was now gone. She looked left and right, but no matter where she looked, she only saw small floating islands off in the distance. “This can’t be happening! What am I going to do!?”

Just thinking about the fact that the floating island was nowhere to be seen devastated Desaray. She was hoping to quickly level up and reunite with her family, but now…. “Is this some kind of cruel punishment?”

She wondered if she had offended some god somewhere and that this was retribution. She fell to her hands and knees and looked at her reflection in the water. She hardly recognized herself with her new body. “I will just need to search each island. I will keep leveling up, and I will find them. No matter how long it takes.”

It was not easy for her to build up her determination like this. She never thought she would come across such a setback like this. She did not know how things were going to turn out, but now that their world seemed to have undergone some sort of reset that gave people systems, she knew her goal was to become strong. And now she had another reason to do so.

“I will eat, then begin the grind. I have no idea how long it will take, but I will try to reach level 20 in a week.” The sad thing about her system was that she could not see her experience bar. It did not tell her how much experience she had to gain per level. She even tried to use appraisal on her menu screen and level but got no response.

Desaray had a quick breakfast that consisted of a single pop tart. It was not the healthiest of foods in the world, but it was enough to keep her going. She had to conserve her food until she understood what she could and could not eat. So she only had a single pop tart just in case she needed to live off them someday.

She analyzed the water at the newly formed lake to find it was quite nourishing for the body. She gulped a few mouth fulls down and felt a refreshing wave sweep over her body. She felt much more awake now and even felt the energy within her grow. “Alright, let’s go do some investigation.”

In order to not end up dying due to her running into a bunch of monsters on accident, Desaray decided to do some investigation. And she had just the spell she could buy that would help in this situation. She opened her spell menu and searched for the name.  She had seen it when she roamed through the list earlier. “Found it! Detection!”

It cost her fifteen skill points, but the cost was worth it if it meant she could be forewarned before something got too close. This would mean no accidentally running into a camp of gray backs or other monsters that were dangerous. Now if they used stealth, that might be a different story since she did noot know if this skill would actually detect stealth enemies.
